Students resist this at first because drawing feels like primary school work, and they stop resisting when they find they can answer structure and function questions without having revised them separately. Memorised sentences cannot do that, however many of them there are. Microscopy and practical techniques get the same treatment on paper. What a stain does, why a section has to be thin, how magnification and resolution differ, how to calculate actual size from a scale bar: these appear in written papers whether or not the school has the equipment to demonstrate them. We work through protocols, discuss what each step is for and practise the calculations, which closes most of the gap left by limited laboratory access. It is not the same as doing the experiment, and it answers the questions the paper asks. The third element is the habit of asking. In a class of thirty, the question that was not understood is rarely raised, and biology compounds silently because each topic assumes the last.
