Parque das Nações drains differently from the rest of the city. The buildings went up with car parks two and three levels below street level, which means waste water from the lower floors, the car park gullies and the plant rooms has to be collected in a sump and pumped into the municipal sewer. A pump with a jammed float switch, a catch basket packed with rags or a furred-up rising main all produce exactly the same symptoms as an ordinary blockage: standing water in the car park, a smell in the plant room, sluggish drainage on the lower floors. So we do not go straight for the pipe. Our sequence is a simple one. We open the sump, read the level, and confirm whether the pump starts and whether what is stopping it is mechanical or an obstruction further downstream. If the trouble is in the rising main, we jet it at a pressure set for that bore; if it is in the sump, we lift out what is in there and clean the basket. On the tower stacks, which serve dozens of flats from the ground floor to the top, we work from the service access points and use the camera to confirm the run is clear along its whole length, not merely punctured in the middle. Inside the flats, the commonest complaint is still the kitchen sink: cooled fat stuck to the wall of the pipe, very often with wet wipes on top of it. Access is the part that takes organising. Getting into a tower with equipment nearly always means the concierge desk, the service lift and a permission from the block, and the car park has limited headroom for a van. We sort that out before we set off, so the journey is not wasted. We work Monday to Saturday, from nine in the morning to eight in the evening, we put customers with water spilling over at the front of the queue, and we say honestly when the first possible visit is the following morning.
