In Lisbon, most of the blockages we are called out to are not in the flat where the water is backing up. Buildings across the city, from the Pombaline blocks of the Baixa to the tenements of Arroios and the towers of the Avenidas Novas, send every kitchen and bathroom on one side of the building down the same vertical stack. When that stack closes up, the water rises at the lowest opening available to it: usually the bath or the shower tray of a first-floor flat, or a gully in the basement. Grasping that at the outset avoids the classic mistake of stripping down traps on the fifth floor when the problem sits six storeys below. That is why the diagnosis comes before the machine. We check how many outlets in the home are draining badly, whether the neighbours have the same symptom, and where the building's inspection chamber runs to. When the layout is not obvious, we put a camera down to pinpoint the blockage and measure how far it lies from the access point. Only then do we choose the method: a mechanical rod for a short branch serving one flat, high-pressure jetting when it is the stack or the building's main drain that has furred up. The camera also records what we found, which is useful once the conversation moves on to the management company. The line between the flat and the communal parts causes most of the confusion, and we always explain where it falls before we start. As a rule, the horizontal run that serves only your home is yours; the vertical stack and the drain in the basement are communal. We can work on either, but for the second we need the block to give us access to the basement and the chambers. We work Monday to Saturday, from nine in the morning to eight in the evening, and we give priority to homes where water is already spilling over. When the day's diary will not stretch, we say so in the morning and book the visit for the next day, rather than leaving a customer waiting.
