Lisbon is almost entirely connected to the municipal sewer, and it is only honest to start there: in most buildings in the Baixa, Arroios or the Avenidas Novas there is no septic tank at all. When waste will not drain in a building on the mains, the cause is a blockage in the stack or in the branch to the sewer, and that is drain cleaning work, not a job for a tanker. We would rather say so on the phone than turn up with a tanker at a house with no tank. The first thing we do is establish, from the age of the building, from the plans or from a site visit, what your property is really connected to. There is genuine tanker work inside the city, though not the kind people picture. We find old tanks under back yards and garages, sealed when the building was connected to the mains and still full of sludge that starts to smell again as soon as there is building work nearby. Forgotten soakaways turn up in former warehouses and workshops along the river, and cisterns under the townhouses of Estrela and Campolide. In the restaurants of the Baixa and Chiado, the piece of equipment that really needs emptying on a cycle is the grease trap. And many buildings have a pumping chamber that collects waste from the basements and lifts it to the sewer: when the pump fails, the chamber fills. The difficult part in Lisbon is access. A tanker cannot park in every street in the centre, and there are streets it simply cannot enter. Before booking we ask where it is possible to stop, how far it is from there to the cover, and whether there are steps or gates in between, because that decides the length of hose we load. In restricted-traffic areas we arrange the work for first thing in the morning and, where there is a managing agent, we ask for access to be opened in advance. At the end the waste travels in our own vehicle to a licensed treatment plant, with a disposal record available if you need it.
