Lisbon's older parishes drain through pipework that was never designed for what goes into it now. Behind the tiles of a Baixa or Estrela building you often find stoneware and cast iron, joined at collars that have roughened with age, with a single stack serving every flat in the column. Where a ground-floor restaurant shares that stack with the homes above, warm fat leaves the kitchen as a liquid and sets a few metres down the pipe as a waxy lining. Add the wipes sold as flushable, which are the single most common cause of household blockages in Portugal, and you have the classic plug: the wipes catch on rough joints, the grease binds them, and the stack narrows until it closes. When it does close, the flat that floods is rarely the flat responsible. Wastewater backs up to the lowest opening available, so a ground-floor WC or a rés-do-chão shower tray takes the discharge of the whole building. That is one of the least intuitive facts about apartment living here, and it decides a great deal: a trap or branch inside your flat is your responsibility, a shared stack is a matter for the condomínio, and a fault out in the street belongs to the municipal network. We establish which of the three you are facing on site, by testing fixtures, opening traps and putting a camera down the branch when what we find does not add up. While you wait, stop using the fixture and stop flushing, because every extra litre has nowhere to go. Do not pour caustic soda or a supermarket drain opener into an old Lisbon pipe: it attacks aged joints, rarely shifts a wipe plug, and leaves us working in caustic water. Leave the plunger alone if the whole column is affected, since pushing only moves the problem into a neighbour's flat. We clear with hand rods, a drum machine sized to the branch and a wet vacuum, and if the camera shows a pipe that is cracked or displaced rather than blocked, we show you the footage and talk about repair.
