The cheapest test for a hidden leak takes five minutes and no equipment. Close every tap in the flat, stop the washing machine and the dishwasher, then go and look at the water meter. If the small dial is still creeping round with nothing running, water is escaping somewhere on your own side of the meter. Much of central Lisboa was plumbed in galvanised steel between the 1950s and the 1970s, chased into thick masonry and plastered over. Those pipes corrode from the inside, and once a pinhole opens the water runs along the pipe, down through a slab and surfaces metres from the actual fault — frequently on a neighbour's ceiling in Estrela or Graça before anything shows in your own rooms. Who repairs what then depends on where the failure sits: inside your flat, in a shared riser, or in the building's common pipework. We establish that on site and leave the decision with your condomínio and your insurer rather than pronouncing on it ourselves.
