On the Telheiras and Alto do Lumiar estates the drainage is municipal and there are no septic tanks. What does exist, in some gated developments built with their own equipment, are small package treatment plants and separators installed at the head of the internal network. That equipment accumulates sludge and needs periodic emptying to keep performing as designed. The difference from a plain septic tank is that the job is not to dump everything and close up: we draw off the sludge, wash down, check the state of the compartments and leave the plant ready to run, without wrecking the biological process established inside it. We arrange this with the managing agent, who usually prefers to do it on a cycle rather than on the back of an overflow. The other front is historic. Around Paço do Lumiar and towards Ameixoeira there are surviving houses and old estates with land, some converted to housing, others still in agricultural or ancillary use, where the tank never stopped being the destination for the waste. On those properties the job is the classic one: find the cover, often buried under bare earth or a concrete slab added later, measure the distance to wherever the tanker can stand, empty it completely and check whether the liquid is still soaking away into the ground. When the owner has no idea how long it has been since the last empty, the thickness of the crust and the smell answer the question, and help set the next interval. In both cases access governs everything. Gated developments require prior authorisation, a logged entry at the gate and often a route along footpaths never designed for heavy vehicles. We do not force it: we would rather park outside and run hose than damage paving or an irrigation system. On the estates the obstacle is the gate and the width of the track, which we confirm from photos before setting off. At the end the waste goes to a licensed treatment plant, with the disposal record handed to whoever engaged us.
