The approach we use is organised by situation rather than by textbook chapter. Instead of starting with greetings and reaching the subjunctive several months later, we begin with whatever is coming up in the next few weeks. If there is a medical appointment, we rehearse the appointment. If there is a contract to be signed, we read the contract together and explain the vocabulary in it. If there is a job interview coming up, we rehearse the interview until the answers come out without hesitation. Grammar arrives afterwards to explain what is already being used, which stops it feeling abstract. People learn considerably faster when what they learn is needed the following day rather than in a year's time. The second strand is listening comprehension, which is where very nearly everyone gets stuck. Portuguese as spoken in Almada, as everywhere else, drops vowels and runs words together, and learning materials rarely prepare anyone for that. We use real audio, repeated several times, followed by a transcript, until the learner starts recognising in rapid speech the words they already know perfectly well in writing. It is the step that changes daily life most, and it is also the one most courses skip entirely, because recorded dialogues are easier to produce than real speech. The third strand is functional writing, kept strictly to what is genuinely needed. Filling in a form, writing a message to a landlord, replying to an email from work or drafting a simple request covers most real requirements. We do not insist on elaborate composition with people who mainly need to get things done. If a reason to write more carefully comes along later, we deal with it then, with the same practical criterion. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.
