Anyone without a computer, or without someone to use one for them, is left outside through no fault of their own. The first job is nearly always the same: sit at the kitchen table, open the pile of sealed envelopes and separate what has a deadline from what does not. Then we deal with what was never answered. We recover or set up the missing logins, check your position with each authority, fill in the forms and book the appointment at a time that suits you. Alfama's streets make any journey complicated — stepped alleys, steep surfaces and no parking at the door — so we arrange the lift and walk or drive with you as far as it is possible to get. At the junta de freguesia (the parish council) we deal with the atestado de residência and other proofs of address; at Finanças and Segurança Social (social security), with the requests that need you present. We can also come round regularly, simply to check the post so that nothing slips past. Some of our rules never change, and it is only fair to state them. We do not move money in bank accounts, we do not keep your passwords once the job is done, and we never take an original away without leaving a written receipt. We are not lawyers (advogados), legal agents (solicitadores) or certified accountants (contabilistas certificados): we give no legal or tax advice, particularly on old tenancy agreements, and we promise no outcome. When a matter calls for one of those professionals we say so plainly and help prepare the papers for the appointment. If the resident wishes, we keep the family informed of where each matter stands.
