Almost everything between the Alameda dos Oceanos, the Passeio do Tejo and Cabo Ruivo went up after the Expo, and that changes how we work. In most of the towers the design already says where the outdoor unit sits: a service balcony behind a metal screen, a recess in the gable or a marked position on the roof, with a conduit running down to the flat. Owners' association rules are detailed about what may be visible, and building management does check. So we confirm beforehand what is authorised and deal with the logistics these buildings require: notifying the concierge, booking the service lift, protecting the lift car and the corridors, and keeping to the hours when work is allowed. Inside the flat the route usually exists, but it is not always clear. We find conduits taken up by television cabling, tight bends where copper pipework cannot pass without risk of crushing, and bulkheads already closed up by later works. We probe the conduit before pulling anything through, and only then set the final route. Drainage in these buildings almost always has a condensate outlet provided on the service balcony: we use it, test the fall with water before closing anything up, and confirm it does not discharge onto the floor below. Vacuuming the circuit and the pressure test are part of the job, not an extra. The last point is sizing, and here the district has a feature of its own: very large glazed openings facing the river, with strong solar gain in the late afternoon. A living room like that heats up far more than its floor area suggests, and ignoring it leaves the equipment working flat out all summer. We measure the opening, the orientation and the type of glass before proposing outputs. In flats used as holiday lets, where the units run for many hours at a stretch, we also suggest cleaning the filters more often than usual.
