Solar Panel Cleaning in Parque das Nações

Parque das Nações was built recently enough that solar is everywhere: thermal collectors feeding the hot water of whole blocks, and increasingly photovoltaic arrays wired for collective self-consumption. What nobody warns the residents about is the exposure. The roofs sit wide open to the wind that runs up the Tagus, and that wind carries a fine damp salt haze off the estuary along with grit from the riverside walkways. Gulls do the rest. The salt film is the awkward part: it is sticky rather than dusty, so it holds every particle that lands on it. Arranja Já comes out to wash photovoltaic and solar thermal panels here properly, and to deal with the building side of the arrangement.

About our service in Parque das Nações

On a block roof the installation almost always belongs to everyone, which changes how the work is organised. A collective solar thermal system or a shared self-consumption array is a condomínio matter, so we speak to the building manager: roof access, when the service lift can be used, whether the door to the terrace is kept locked, and who signs off the visit. If your panels are individual ones on your own roof terrace or balcony, access still has to be squared with the building, and it is worth sorting that before we arrive rather than on the day. The method does not change with the setting. Salt does not come off with force, it comes off with water, so we flood the glass with demineralised water and work it gently with a soft brush at a controlled pressure. High pressure is never used: it can push water past the frame seal, and the risk lands on the junction box behind the module. Nothing abrasive touches the surface either, because the anti-reflective coating is the part that makes the panel worth having, and a scoured panel is also a good way to lose the manufacturer's warranty. Acidic and alkaline cleaners are out for the same reason. Demineralised water has one more advantage here: it dries clean, with none of the limescale spotting that mains water leaves on dark glass. We do not work in the middle of a hot day. Cold water on glass that has been baking is a thermal shock, and micro-cracks in the cells are the kind of damage you never see and never stop paying for. Early morning, late afternoon, or a cloudy day. While the panels dry we check them over: glass, seals, frame corners, clamps and the drainage channels that the wind fills with grit and feathers. We clean the frames and clear what has packed in beneath the rows. If something on the electrical side looks wrong, a discoloured connector or a cable rubbed bare, we point it out and tell you to bring in your installer. Inverters, DC wiring and protections are not ours to touch, and we never lift a module out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What residents and building managers in Parque das Nações usually ask:

The panels serve the whole block. Who has to authorise the cleaning?

The roof is common property, so a collective installation is a condomínio decision. In practice we deal with the building manager or the administration company: they approve the work, arrange terrace access and let residents know when we will be on the roof.

Does the salt off the river really need a specialist wash?

Salt is what makes this spot different. It forms a tacky film that grabs dust and grit instead of blowing off, and rain only smears it. It dissolves readily in plenty of water, which is exactly why we flood the glass rather than scrub or blast it.

The gulls are constant. Is there any point cleaning if they come straight back?

There is, because a single dried dropping sitting on one cell is worse than an even layer of dust: that shaded spot can drag on the whole string and heat up. We take the mess off and clear the frames, though we do not fit deterrents or netting.
