Gardening Services in Cascais
Cascais is one of the few places around Lisbon where gardens genuinely take up space: houses in Birre, Quinta da Marinha, Torre and Manique with lawns, hedges, mature trees and, more often than not, an automatic watering system already in the ground. It is also a demanding place to garden. Wind comes in off the Atlantic between Guincho and the town carrying salt, which scorches soft new growth on the exposed side of a plot while the sheltered side grows away untroubled. Our team travels out to Cascais for regular upkeep and one-off work: mowing and lawn care, pruning trees and shrubs, irrigation installation and repair, planting and transplanting, and taking a garden back in hand when it has run ahead of its owner. Many houses here stand empty for part of the year, so we work to an agreed calendar.

About our service in Cascais
Grass in this area grows in two bursts, spring and again after the autumn rain, and it very nearly stops in the heat of August. A lawn kept on a regular cycle through those bursts thickens and begins to shade out its own weeds; the same lawn left for six weeks and then cut hard goes yellow and spends most of a season recovering. That is why we agree a visit calendar rather than a single frequency for the whole year: closer together while everything is growing, spaced out in high summer and midwinter, with hedges and shrubs taken at the point in the year that suits the species rather than whenever the van happens to be passing. Salt is the local constraint that catches people out. On the seaward side of a plot the wind burns the tips of anything soft and dries the ground faster than an owner expects, so we lean on plants that shrug it off and use tougher material as a screen for the rest. Watering matters even more than the plant list. A system that runs for a few minutes every evening keeps roots in the top layer of soil, exactly where the summer sun finds them; longer runs, further apart, early in the morning, send roots down and lose far less to evaporation. Mains water here is hard, so emitters clog and foliage gets marked, and flushing the lines and cleaning drippers belongs in the routine. A good number of Cascais gardens belong to people who are only here part of the year. For those we keep the beds and lawn in hand while the house is shut and send photographs after a visit, so you can see what was done and what is due next. Mature trees come with one caution worth knowing before you buy a planted plot: several species in Portugal are legally protected, cork oak and holm oak among them, and olives are covered by their own rules, so felling one can require authorisation. We identify the tree first and will not take one down on request alone. Maintenance pruning is a separate matter and we carry that out normally. Prunings leave with us for a licensed disposal point. Land left to go wild is clearance work, which is a different service.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Cascais homeowners usually ask us first:
Can you keep the garden going while the house is empty?
That is a large part of what we do here. We agree a calendar of visits, adjust the frequency between the growing season and high summer, and send photographs afterwards so nothing is a surprise when you arrive.
There is a big old oak on the plot. Can you fell it?
Not on request alone. Some species, cork oak and holm oak in particular, carry legal protection in Portugal and felling may need authorisation, and olives have their own rules. We identify the tree first; if it turns out to be protected the route is authorisation, not a chainsaw. Pruning for shape and safety is unaffected.
The lawn browns off every August whatever we do. Why?
Usually because the watering is short and frequent. Brief evening bursts keep the roots shallow, so the first real heat finds them. Fewer, longer runs early in the morning, plus a slightly higher cut in summer, make more difference than adding water.
