Gardening Services in Estoril
Villa gardens along this stretch of coast are rarely flat. Between Monte Estoril and Livramento the ground steps down towards the sea in terraces held by low walls, and a plot that measures modestly on paper turns out to be several separate gardens at different levels, each with its own light, wind and drainage. Add the mature pines and cypresses planted when these houses were built and you have deep shade in one corner and full Atlantic exposure in another. We work in Estoril on lawn mowing and upkeep, pruning trees and shrubs, watering systems, planting and transplanting, and getting an overgrown garden back under control. Access is often the first thing we look at, because a mower has to reach the lower terraces somehow.

About our service in Estoril
Terracing changes how a garden behaves. Water runs off the upper levels and collects at the foot of retaining walls, so the top of a plot dries out while the bottom stays damp enough for moss to take the edge of a lawn. We read that before proposing anything: which beds actually need watering, which need drainage rather than more water, and where a slope is steep enough that grass is the wrong answer and low ground cover would hold the soil better. Cut grass on a bank also has to be handled differently, because clippings left on a slope slide into a mat that smothers what is underneath. The older planting here is the other defining feature. Pines, cypress hedges and established shrubs put in decades ago now cast far more shade than they did, and lawns thin out beneath them however carefully they are fed. Thinning a canopy to let light through is usually a better move than replacing the grass, and it is work for winter or very early spring for most species rather than the middle of the growing season. Screening hedges are a standing job along the line, where houses sit close together and privacy depends on a hedge holding its shape; taken little and often it stays dense, whereas one hard annual cut leaves bare wood that takes years to green over. Salt-laden air and hard mains water shape the rest. Foliage on the seaward side takes a beating in a strong westerly, and limescale gradually marks leaves and narrows drippers, so cleaning emitters and checking pressure is part of a routine visit rather than a call-out. Where a house is let seasonally we time the heavier work before arrivals so the garden looks its best on changeover, and green waste goes with us to a licensed disposal point. Before any tree comes out we establish the species: cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal and olives have their own regime, so felling can require authorisation and we never promise it on the spot. Clearing an abandoned plot is separate work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Questions we hear from Estoril households:
Nothing grows under the big pines. Is that fixable?
Partly. Grass will always struggle in that much shade and root competition, but thinning the canopy in the dormant season lets light through, and shade-tolerant ground cover holds better than repeatedly resowing a lawn that has no chance.
Can you reach a garden that is three terraces below the street?
Usually, but it dictates the equipment and the time, so we look at the access route during the visit before quoting rather than guessing from a photograph of the garden alone.
How often does a screening hedge need cutting?
More often than most people think during spring and autumn growth, and hardly at all in high summer. Light, frequent cuts keep it thick to the base; a single heavy cut once a year opens gaps that take seasons to close.
