Gardening Services in Sintra

Gardening on the serra is a different trade from gardening ten kilometres away. Sintra makes its own weather: mist sits in the valleys, walls and paths stay damp for weeks, and gardens in Penaferrim, Estefânia or up towards Monte Santos spend much of the year in the shade of trees planted generations ago. Moss creeps into lawns, camellias and hydrangeas do well where a Mediterranean border would sulk, and out at Colares the wind and the sandy ground change the rules again. Our team travels out to Sintra for lawn upkeep, pruning trees and shrubs, watering systems, planting and transplanting, and bringing the grounds of a quinta back into order.

About our service in Sintra

Damp and shade set the agenda. A lawn that never dries out turns spongy and gradually goes over to moss, and no amount of mowing changes that on its own; what changes it is more light and better drainage. Thinning branches overhead, keeping leaf fall off the grass through the autumn, opening the surface so water moves rather than sits, and cutting a touch higher all shift the balance back towards grass. Paths and steps in these gardens get slippery for the same reason, so clearing them is part of the round rather than a favour. Watering is often the smallest problem in a Sintra garden and drainage the biggest, which is the opposite of what new arrivals expect. Dense, humid planting also brings disease pressure, and we handle that culturally rather than with promises. Giving plants room, thinning congested growth so air moves through a shrub, taking off affected material and removing it from the garden, and watering at the base rather than over the leaves all reduce the problem. We do not present any treatment as harmless, we do not name products, and we will not claim to wipe out a disease or a pest for good. What we can do is keep a garden in the condition where it is least likely to take hold. Mature trees are the glory of this area and the point that needs most care. Several species carry legal protection in Portugal, cork oak and holm oak among them, and olives fall under their own rules, so removing a tree can require authorisation. We identify what is growing before any conversation about felling, and we will not agree to it on request alone. Crown work, deadwood removal and reduction pruning are normal maintenance and mostly winter jobs here. On quinta grounds we agree a calendar, because growth surges in spring and again through the wet autumn, and prunings leave with us for a licensed disposal point. Land that has genuinely gone back to scrub is clearance work, which we treat separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions from Sintra gardens and quintas:

The lawn is more moss than grass. Can it be reversed?

Yes, but not by mowing alone. Moss wins where light is scarce and water sits. Thinning what is overhead, keeping fallen leaves off the grass, improving surface drainage and mowing a little higher shift conditions back in favour of grass over a season or two.

Do you spray for mildew and pests?

We work on the cultural side: spacing, thinning for airflow, removing affected material from the garden and watering at the base rather than over the foliage. We will not present any treatment as being without risk, and we do not promise to eliminate a disease permanently.

There are old oaks on the property. Can they be cut back or taken out?

Cut back, yes, and winter is usually the moment. Taken out is another matter: cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal and olives have their own regime, so felling may need authorisation. We identify the species before anything is agreed.
