The câmara municipal enforces it and can have the work carried out where the owner has not. The rules and deadlines change from year to year and vary by município, so check with the câmara municipal for the current position on your parcel. Access sets the method here more than anywhere else we work. Many Sintra plots are reached by a single walled lane too narrow for a tractor, and the ground behind the house rises in terraces with granite outcrops between them. That is hand work: brushcutters, chainsaws, and material carried out to the road by barrow. Where a plot opens onto a wider track towards Colares, mechanical clearing becomes possible and the job changes shape completely. Under long growth we find the usual buried surprises, and in Sintra specifically a lot of collapsed wall stone, old irrigation tanks and cisterns with no visible cover. We flag anything like that and photograph it rather than working over it. Pines, acacia regrowth and self-seeded eucalyptus make up much of what needs cutting, but protected species sit in among them. Cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal and olive trees are regulated, and both appear on the older quinta parcels around the serra. We identify each tree before deciding anything, and a protected one goes down the authorisation route or stays standing. All cut material is loaded and delivered to a licensed disposal point; we do not dispose of it by fire on the land. Be realistic about the follow-up too: with this microclimate, one cut buys you a season, no more.

How soon does it all grow back on a Sintra plot?

Faster than owners expect, and we would rather say so than sell you a single visit as a permanent solution. The serra keeps the ground damp for much of the year, so bracken, brambles and acacia shoots are back in one growing season. Cutting once removes the fuel load that is there now; keeping the plot clear means coming back on a schedule, usually with a heavier cut before the fire season and a lighter tidy afterwards. We can quote the first clearance on its own and let you decide about maintenance later.

The lane to my land is too narrow for a tractor. Is that a problem?

It changes the method and the cost, not whether the job is possible. Plenty of parcels around the vila and Colares are reached by walled lanes, and we work those on foot with brushcutters and chainsaws, barrowing the material out to wherever the vehicle can wait. It takes longer than mechanical clearing and it means more handling of the cut material, which is why we always want to see the access before quoting rather than guess from a map.

Do you take away everything you cut, or is it left on the plot?

We take it away, and that is usually the largest single item in the quote. Green waste from an overgrown plot is bulkier than anyone imagines and turns into several loads. It goes to a licensed disposal point, with nothing dealt with by fire on your land, because disposal of vegetation residue is regulated and prohibited during certain periods. If you would prefer some of the woody material chipped and left on site as mulch, say so at the visit and we will price it that way.
