Lisbon's building stock runs from eighteenth-century Pombaline blocks in the Baixa to towers put up in the last decade, and the cleaning problems change with the century. In the older parishes you meet lime-based plaster, painted wood, azulejo skirting and stone stairs — surfaces that dislike aggressive alkaline products and standing water. Newer flats in Campolide or the upper Avenidas Novas bring lacquered kitchen fronts, stainless extractors, laminate floors and glass shower screens, where the enemies are limescale, grease film and streaks rather than ingrained dirt. We match the product to the surface in each room instead of carrying one bottle around the whole flat. A general clean covers the whole home: kitchen surfaces, hob and sink, bathrooms sanitised from tiles to taps, floors vacuumed and mopped to suit the material, dusting including skirting, sills and light switches, beds changed if you leave the linen out, and bins emptied. A deep clean adds the parts a weekly routine never reaches — inside the oven and fridge, behind and under appliances where possible, extractor filters, tile grout, window frames and the tops of wardrobes and doors. My flat has original wooden floors. Will you use water on them?
Only sparingly. Old Lisbon boards swell and lift if they are soaked, so we vacuum first and then use a barely damp mop with a neutral product, working along the grain. If the boards are waxed or unsealed we will tell you before we start and stick to dry methods.
There is nowhere to park outside my building. Is that a problem?
It is manageable, but tell us when you book. In the Baixa, Chiado and Graça we plan for a drop-off and carry the kit in, which changes the arrival window rather than the work. Knowing in advance stops the visit starting late.
Can you do a clean between two short lets?
Yes. Changeover cleans are a fixed scope — kitchen, bathrooms, floors, glass, linen change and bins — done inside the window between check-out and check-in. Agree the timings and key arrangements with us beforehand so the schedule holds.
