Extraction leaves the material damp, and that is the part people underestimate: the car has to air properly, doors open, before it is used again and certainly before it is shut up overnight. Skip that and you have simply moved the damp problem from the carpet to the whole cabin. Leather wants the opposite approach. It gets a pH-neutral cleaner applied to a cloth and worked gently, never an all-purpose spray or anything sold as a degreaser. Salt is genuinely hard on leather, drawing moisture out of the finish, so a car that carries wet swimmers regularly benefits from being cleaned and conditioned more often rather than more aggressively. Alcantara, which turns up on steering wheels and seat inserts in a lot of newer cars, is more delicate than either: it flattens permanently if it is scrubbed and it marks if it is soaked, so it is worked lightly and dried fast. Then there is the boot, which in a surfing household is the worst part of the car and the part nobody looks at. Sand under the floor panel, salt water that has run off a suit and dried in the spare wheel well, and a lining that smells even after the boards come out. We take the floor panel up, clean the well itself, extract the lining and let it air. The exterior gets a low-water wash that clears the salt film off the glass and paint, with no hose and nothing running away down the street.

Salt water has dried into the boot lining. Can that be got out?
Yes, but not by wiping it. Salt crystallises inside the fibres as the water evaporates, which is why the lining still feels stiff and smells after it has dried. Extraction dissolves and draws it back out. We also lift the floor panel, because most of it has run down into the spare wheel well where nobody ever looks.
My seats are part leather, part Alcantara. Are they cleaned the same way?
No. Leather takes a pH-neutral cleaner, gently worked and wiped off, and never a degreaser. Alcantara is much more delicate: scrub it and the pile flattens for good, soak it and it marks, so it is cleaned with a light touch and dried quickly. How soon can I put the surfboard back in after a clean?
Give the boot lining time to air with the tailgate open before anything wet goes back in, otherwise you are starting the cycle again on day one. A dry bag or a proper changing mat makes an enormous difference to how long the clean lasts. We will say when we finish how damp things feel and whether we would leave it open a while longer.
