Which finish stands up best in a hallway with children?
One you can wipe. In hallways, stairs, kitchens and children's rooms we normally suggest a more washable finish with a little more sheen, because it survives hands, bags, scooters and felt-tip pens far better than a flat matt, which absorbs marks and cannot be cleaned without burnishing. Matt is lovely in a sitting room or a main bedroom where nothing touches the wall. We will talk through where each one belongs in your flat rather than using the same product everywhere.
Do we need to move out while you paint?
No. Most of our work here is done with the family in the flat. We agree the order of rooms first so you always have somewhere to sleep, wash and cook, then work one room at a time with furniture covered, floors sheeted and ventilation kept going. Each evening the tools are cleared, the dust is cleaned and the rooms you need are handed back. It takes a bit longer than an empty flat and it saves you the cost and upheaval of going elsewhere.
The crack over my door has been filled before and it came back. Will it this time?
If it is a shrinkage crack, opening it out, filling it in thin layers and reinforcing the joint normally keeps it closed. If it has already been repaired more than once and keeps reappearing along the same line, it is moving, and nothing you put in it will hold, because filler is rigid and the joint is not. We would rather tell you that and suggest getting the cause looked at than take the money and watch it split open again after we leave.
