A masonry tank built in the first half of the last century looks nothing like a prefabricated unit. It is bigger, its rendered walls decay, it has compartments divided by internal walls, and the cover does not always sit where the trouble shows. In the villas of Monte Estoril, Alapraia and Livramento, those structures ended up beneath gardens redesigned over generations, with hedges, paving and irrigation on top. So the job begins with a methodical search: we follow the outlet from the house, look for intermediate chambers, probe where the ground sounds different. When the cover really is under laid paving, we say before starting that it will have to be opened, and the owner decides with that in hand. Once open, an old tank has to be emptied carefully. The contents are layered, with a thick crust on top and compacted sludge at the bottom that will not come out on suction alone. We alternate vacuum with water injection to break up the deposit, remove it all and wash the inside. Then we inspect what is only visible with the structure empty: internal walls that have collapsed and let solids through to the second compartment, render that has lost its grip, a blocked outlet, roots from the garden. This is the most useful part of the visit, because on a tank of this age the clean is the right moment to see whether the structure still does its job or is leaking where it should not. The topography of Estoril adds a practical problem: nearly every garden slopes between the road and the house. The tanker stands on the public road and the hose runs several metres up or down to the suction point, which has consequences for working time and for the length needed. We confirm that difference in level from photographs before travelling. Many of these houses are second homes or seasonal lets, and in those cases we deal with whoever manages the property, hand over a written record of the visit and take the waste to a licensed treatment plant.
