Before we talk about volumes, we talk about access. Houses on the hills are reached by roads with tight bends, stone walls and unmade side tracks where a loaded tanker has nowhere to turn. So we ask for photographs of the last stretch and of the gate, and the rough distance between that point and the tank cover. With that we decide whether to send a larger vehicle or a smaller one that fits where the other will not, and we load the hose length the ground demands. The microclimate of the hills has direct consequences for how these tanks behave. It rains a great deal, the soil stays waterlogged for much of the year, the clay drains poorly and the slopes funnel all the run-off to the lowest point of the plot, which is almost always where the tank was installed. The result is a drainage field that saturates and stops accepting flow, and a tank that fills faster than the number of people in the house would justify. So after emptying and washing out we always check the outlet and the state of the soakaway. When water stands at the outlet with the tank empty, the problem is the ground, not the volume, and we say so plainly instead of proposing ever more frequent cleans. There is also the matter of finding the cover. On older properties the tank has ended up under a vegetable patch, a flower bed added later, topsoil brought in during works or a concrete slab somebody laid without knowing what was beneath. We follow the outlet from the house and the intermediate chambers until we locate it and, where paving has to be broken, we say so first and leave the decision with the owner. At holiday houses and estates with rural tourism we plan the empty outside the occupied periods. The waste goes to a licensed treatment plant, with the disposal record handed over.
