We ask about the state of the track, the width of the entrance and the distance between the point where we can stop and the tank cover, which on agricultural land can be tens of metres from the house. Where the property has vines or an orchard, we avoid driving onto soft ground that could be damaged and prefer to run hose from firm track. During harvest or periods of intense farm work, we set the date so as not to clash with the activity. What happens to the waste deserves a word, because in the countryside the temptation to spread it on the land still exists and it is not lawful. What we collect is waste, and it travels in our own vehicle to a licensed treatment plant, with a consignment note and disposal record handed to whoever engaged us. On holdings with a commercial activity, that document is part of what can be asked for in any inspection. If, on emptying, we find contents that are not of domestic origin, we say so and handle the disposal accordingly, even where that makes the job slower than planned.
