Water appearing on a ceiling in a flat has three possible origins: the pipework of the home above, a shared riser crossing the floor slab, or the affected flat's own installation, condensation on pipes included. The thermal image does not settle the question on its own, but it separates the scenarios well. Hot water from above marks a warm line following the route of a branch. A shared riser losing water draws a vertical patch alongside the stack, in the same position on different floors. Condensation on cold pipework gives a continuous, even cold band with no point of origin. Reading the right pattern saves months of accusations back and forth. Ideally we inspect both flats, with the agreement of both, and on the same day. We ask for hot water to be circulating, we test sections by closing stopcocks, and we watch how the image evolves over the course of the visit, because an anomaly that changes when a tap is opened tells us more than an isolated photograph. We confirm with a contact moisture meter. In the older blocks of central Algés and the Alto de Algés, where pipework has been replaced in parts, it is common to find added runs that appear on no drawing at all — and that is exactly where the trouble usually sits. We say what the inspection is not. It is not a survey with legal standing, although dated images are accepted as technical material by building managers and insurers. It does not cross the slab: it reads what reaches the surface and lets the route be inferred. It needs a thermal difference, and without hot water circulating or contrast between rooms the result is thin. And if the image is not decisive, the next step is opening up at one point to confirm, said with that frankness rather than naming someone responsible with no basis for it.
