In those houses the heat mostly leaves through the top. A roof void with no insulation, or with insulation laid in stages and left interrupted, works as a collector: warm air from the home rises, meets the cold ceiling and is lost there before any wall enters the reckoning. The thermal camera shows this very well when the house is heated and the night has cooled things down — the areas where insulation is missing or has been squashed draw themselves sharply on the top-floor ceiling. In the same visit we check the whole envelope: ceilings, the junction of walls with the roof, external doors, and the outbuildings, which tend to be the worst and the least watched. Thick walls call for a different approach. Stone or solid brick masonry has great thermal mass: it takes time to warm, time to cool and responds slowly to any change. A reading taken shortly after the heating goes on is misleading. That is why we ask for the house to be heated several hours in advance and prefer to book in the cold season, first thing in the morning or at the end of the day. We work room by room, compare external walls with internal ones, record thermogram and photograph in the same framing and confirm the damp points with a contact moisture meter. The limits are the same in any house, but they weigh more here. Without a temperature difference between inside and outside the image has no content, and in very thick walls that difference is slow to establish itself. The camera reads the surface, not the inside of the wall, and does not measure quantities of water. Where there is no safe access to the void or the roof, we say so and write down what went unobserved. And when the image raises a suspicion without confirming it, the recommendation is to open up at one point, rather than writing a conclusion nobody can stand behind.
