Belém's condominiums are not all alike, but they share one thing: the common parts were built to last, out of materials that are still there. In the Restelo, the lobbies of the buildings from the fifties and sixties have stone floors, wooden frames and handrails, brass door furniture and letterboxes. Wood will not take water in quantity, only a damp cloth and a product made for it, or the varnish opens and the grain lifts. Brass loses its shine under harsh detergents and comes back with gentle polishing, done regularly rather than once a year. Stone is washed with neutral detergent and no acid, so the pores stay closed and no white bloom appears along the skirting. Many of these buildings have a yard or an inner courtyard, with trees and planted beds. That is where the invisible work piles up: leaves blocking the gutter and the gully, soil tracked into the lobby, dust on the glass of the access doors. We sweep and collect, clear the surface gully when leaves have capped it, and clean the threshold and the barrier mat, which is what stops half the dirt getting in. Where the condominium has its own gardener, we set our day for the day after the cut rather than the same day, so the work is not done twice. In the Junqueira, around Pedrouços and down by the river there is a lot of visitor traffic and several buildings given over to holiday lets. That means cases bumping up and down, crumbs on the landings, entrance doors touched constantly and glass marked at hand height. In those buildings we concentrate the effort on the ground floor and the lift, with a mid-week visit where the owners' meeting approves one. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, on a fixed day, with our own equipment and consumables, and we tell the manager when we find something that is not cleaning at all, such as a loose door handle or a lock beginning to give.
