Hot water pipework is the most favourable case for thermography, because the heat it gives off travels through the render and draws a sharp line at the surface. With the system circulating, the real route appears in the image even when it does not match what everyone assumed. A loss shows itself as an abnormal widening of that line, a patch drifting away from the route, or a persistently warm area on a wall where nothing should be running. In central heating installations with radiators, we also look for runs that fail to warm, a sign of trapped air or an obstruction, and compare flow and return temperatures to understand how the circuit is working. The visit follows a fixed order. We check the boiler or the cylinder and the visible connections first, then put the system under pressure with hot water circulating for a while, and only then work across walls and floors with the camera. We mark out on site, with tape, the points where the pipework passes and the likely point of loss, so that whoever carries out the repair opens a small area instead of tearing out metres of wall. Every suspicion is confirmed with a contact moisture meter and recorded with thermogram and photograph in the same framing. The final report describes what was seen, what could not be seen, and what we recommend. There are cases where the reading is not enough, and we would rather warn you beforehand. Cold water pipework gives off no heat and is only detectable through the cooling of the wet area, which demands better conditions. Pipework buried deep, under thick screed or stone finishes, may never show itself at the surface at all. The camera does not see the pipe, it sees its effect, and without a temperature difference it sees nothing. Where that is the case, we say confirmation means opening up at one point, rather than sending anyone in on luck.
