Cleaning a condominium in Alfama is first of all a problem of access. The van stays some way off, often near Santa Apolónia or in a street where you can stop only briefly, and the rest is done on foot, up the steps, with the kit split between the team. So we bring light equipment and the water we are going to use, rather than counting on a communal tap that often does not exist. Knowing that before proposing a contract is what separates a realistic proposal from one that falls apart in the third week. The buildings are old and need a careful hand. The treads are irregular stone, hollowed in the middle, and the stairwell walls carry traditional render, sometimes with old tiles to half height. Where a tread is dished, water pools: we dry as we go rather than leaving it to the air. The natural damp of these buildings, made worse by the river, brings mould into the corners and the landing ceilings, which we treat with the right product and flag to the manager when the cause is water ingress rather than a lack of cleaning. Alfama now has many flats let to visitors, and it shows in the common parts: cases dragged up the treads, lost key cards, bags left outside the agreed hours by the door because the collection point is some distance away. We agree a fixed cleaning day with the manager and, where it makes sense, extra attention to the entrance floor, which takes the worst of it. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, we sign the stairs while they dry, and we note in writing whatever we find, from a blown bulb to a loose railing.
