In Sintra it is the constant damp that sets condominium cleaning apart. On the outdoor steps, in the courtyards and on the access ramps, a green layer of algae takes hold on whichever side gets least sun, and it makes the surface dangerously slippery in the rain. It does not come off with a mop or a quick pass: it is dealt with using a brush, a suitable detergent and a proper rinse, and only then can you see the real state of the surface underneath. On worn stone treads we pay particular attention to the nosing, which is where the foot lands and where a fall happens. Inside the buildings the same damp shows up differently. The corners of the landings, the ceilings by the roof lights and the stairwell walls facing north develop patches of mould. We clean them with the right product and insist on ventilation: opening the stairwell windows while we work makes more difference than any product. When the patch always returns in the same place, the cause is water ingress or condensation and we say so to the manager in writing, because cleaning the same wall month after month does not solve the problem, it only postpones it. The town also has heavy visitor traffic, above all in the historic centre and around the Estefânia, and many old buildings with an entrance courtyard and a stone staircase. In those, the dust off the street mixes with the damp and forms a layer that grips the surface, which means always sweeping dry before any washing, or mud forms in the joints of the stone. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, on a fixed day agreed with the manager, with our own equipment and consumables, and we sign the wet floors while they dry, which in this climate takes longer than elsewhere.
