Salt is a solvent problem, not a scrubbing problem. It dissolves readily in plenty of water, and the whole point of the visit is to give it that water rather than to abrade it away. We flood the modules with demineralised water and work the surface with a soft brush at controlled pressure, letting the film release before it is brushed. Demineralised water matters twice over on the coast: it takes the salt into solution and it dries without laying down the limescale spotting that hard mains water leaves on dark glass, which on a seafront roof simply becomes the next layer of dirt. What we will not do is as important. Never a pressure washer: water forced against a frame joint can pass the seal and reach the junction box behind the module, and on a villa roof that is a genuinely expensive mistake. Never an abrasive pad, a blade or a gritty paste, because the anti-reflective coating on the glass is a thin surface treatment and dulling it is irreversible. Never an acidic or alkaline detergent. And it is worth saying plainly that a manufacturer will happily refuse a warranty claim on a module that has been cleaned that way. Heat sets the appointment time. A south-facing Cascais roof in the afternoon is hot enough that cold water is a shock to the glass, and thermal shock is how micro-cracks start in the cells. We work early, or in the last hours of the afternoon, or on an overcast day. On a villa there is usually a sensible way up, but it is still work at height and we bring the equipment for it: ladder, harness and anchor line, a platform where the pitch demands it, or a telescopic pole from ground level when the rows are within reach. We do not stand on modules, and we do not walk old corrugated fibre-cement sheeting on a garage or outbuilding roof, because it is brittle and may contain asbestos. We finish by clearing the frames, the gutters and the debris trapped beneath the rows, and by telling you what the glass and fixings look like. Anything electrical goes to your installer, not to us.
