Organic soiling behaves nothing like dust, and it is why a Sintra visit takes longer. Moss and algae have a grip on the surface and cannot simply be flicked away. We wet the rows with demineralised water, give the growth time to swell and let go, then bring it off with a soft brush at a gentle, controlled pressure, repeating the soak wherever it resists. Resin flecks get exactly the same patience and never a blade. What is tempting in this valley, and what we refuse to do, is reach for something stronger: a pressure lance would push water past the frame seals into the cavity where the cabling runs, a scouring pad would abrade the anti-reflective coating off the glass for good, and a biocidal, acidic or alkaline product would attack that same coating chemically. Any of the three also hands the manufacturer a reason to reject a warranty claim. It is worth being straight about what a wash achieves here and what it cannot. Clean glass lets a module work in the conditions it was designed for, and it clears the localised patches — a dropping, a clump of needles — that can pull a whole string down through hot-spot behaviour. It does not cure shade. Where a pine, a garden wall or the ridge behind the house puts the array in shadow for part of the day, that is a design constraint and washing changes nothing about it. The same goes for a compromised orientation, an ageing module or a failing inverter. If output stays flat once the glass is clean, that is where to look next, with your installer. Owners often ask whether the rain has not already dealt with it. It has not: rain carries off the loose surface dust, leaves the bound layer in place and dries it into streaks, and in air this humid it keeps the moss watered too. Access needs the same realism. Roofs here are often wet, mossy and genuinely slippery, modules are never somewhere to put a foot, and we prefer an overcast morning, easy to come by locally and safer besides, since cold water on sun-baked glass is a thermal shock. Old corrugated fibre-cement on a garage or annexe we will not walk on at all: it is brittle and may contain asbestos, so we change the access method or turn the roof down.
