Those three causes call for completely different work, and confusing them leads to pointless intervention. In the quintas and old houses of Sintra vila, São Pedro de Penaferrim and Colares, with thick stone walls and floors laid straight on the ground, two of them often coexist in the same room. The thermal camera helps to separate them: condensation settles on the coldest surfaces in the room, corners and window heads, with a diffuse and symmetrical outline; infiltration draws irregular patches pointing at an origin; water rising from the ground makes a band of constant height along the skirting. We read the pattern and cross it with a contact moisture meter and with how the house behaves over the year. The inspection always takes in the surroundings. In the hill houses we check eaves, gutters, walls built against the bank, tiled roofs and areas in permanent shade, because a house that never catches direct sun dries badly and accumulates problems differently from an exposed one. Inside we work room by room, with the house heated and closed up beforehand, comparing external walls with internal ones. We record thermogram and photograph in the same framing and rank the findings by priority, separating what ventilation and habits will fix from what calls for building work. In very thick walls thermography is more demanding, and that is worth saying. The thermal mass of stone slows the response, contrast takes time to build and a hurried reading misleads. That is why we ask for heating beforehand and prefer the cold months, when the difference with the outside is clear. The camera does not see into the wall and does not measure water content; it reads temperature at the surface. When doubt persists, we recommend opening up at one well-chosen point rather than treating as settled what the image merely suggests. Nor do we carry out regulatory habitability assessments of the property.
