Resin is the local speciality and it deserves an honest description. Pine sap lands on a warm panel, spreads out and then hardens, and once it has been baked by a few weeks of sun it is chemically bonded to the lacquer rather than sitting on it. It can be softened and lifted with the right product and a great deal of patience, and most of the time it comes away cleanly. Sometimes it has been there long enough to have dulled the clear coat underneath, and when that has happened, cleaning will not restore the gloss. We will tell you that when we see it rather than after we have taken your money, because we do not correct paintwork, we do not machine polish and we make no promise to remove scratches or marks in the lacquer. Damp is the other half of the Sintra problem, and it works from the outside in. Leaves and needles pack into the scuttle vents below the windscreen, block the drains that are supposed to carry rainwater away, and the water then finds another route, which is very often into a footwell. A car that smells musty in this microclimate usually has a wet carpet somewhere and a blocked drain above it. Clearing the scuttle out is a five-minute job that saves a lot of trouble, and it is part of what we do. There is also a limit to what a dry wash can do, and mud is where it stops. A car that has come down a forest track or off a wet unmade drive is carrying grit, and dragging grit across paint with a cloth scratches it. We look before we start, and where the vehicle is too heavily soiled we decline the exterior and do the interior instead, which is unaffected by whatever is on the outside.

Most of the time, yes, with the right product and patience. The interior always, and the exterior depending on how bad it is. A waterless wash cannot deal with caked mud or heavy grit, because wiping that across the paint puts fine scratches into it. We assess before we start and if the car is not suitable we say so. It is not us being difficult, it is the difference between cleaning your car and damaging it.
