The answer is not a thicker coat of paint, which will make a shiny surface look worse. It is filling in thin passes, sanding flat with a long block and checking the wall under a raking lamp before priming, then choosing a sheen level that flatters rather than exposes the surface. We would sooner spend the extra time at the preparation stage than hand over a wall that only looks acceptable at midday. Plasterboard also behaves differently from masonry. It drinks the first coat unevenly unless it is sealed, fixings need the right anchors when shelving comes back up, and a knock puts a dent in the board rather than chipping the surface. New joints and screw heads move slightly as a building settles, so fine cracks at the ceiling line or along a partition are common in these flats and are filled with tape or a flexible reinforcement rather than plain filler. Where a crack keeps reopening we say so instead of insisting on more filler, and point you towards a technical opinion. Damp is less usual here than in the old city, but it is not absent, and painting over damp does not fix it. Why does my living room wall look bumpy when the sun comes round?
Because the light is hitting it almost side-on and every small variation in the surface casts a shadow. Scuffs, picture holes and marked hallway corners get filled and the affected walls recoated properly rather than dabbed. We photograph the work so you can see what was done, which helps if you are not in Lisboa.
