Odivelas is a municipality in constant change, and the condominiums feel it in a very concrete way: there is nearly always a flat being refurbished. Dust from demolition and cutting does not stay inside the apartment; it escapes through the door, settles on the landing, works its way down flight by flight and gets into the lift, where fine plaster and concrete dust clings to the walls and the door channel. In a routine clean that dust lifts again if it is swept dry, so it is dealt with by vacuum and damp cloth, from the top down, and never with a broom. With the manager we agree what is routine cleaning and what is extraordinary cleaning at the cost of the owner doing the work, ideally before the work starts. In the settled neighbourhoods, such as Pontinha, Olival Basto and Póvoa de Santo Adrião, the buildings are older and the work is the classic stairwell: treads, handrails, flat doors, letterboxes, entrance glass and the lobby, which is the building's calling card. In the newer estates of Famões, Caneças and Ramada, the lobbies are larger, with glass and large-format flooring, and there are garages with many bays, several ramps and automatic gates whose tracks have to be kept free of debris or they stop closing. The garage is what needs most planning. With the bays almost always occupied, we wash sector by sector in rotation, with notice posted in advance, so that by the end of a cycle the whole basement has been done without ever requiring it to be emptied on a single day. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, on a fixed day, with our own equipment and consumables, and we leave the manager a record of what was done and of anything observed on each visit.
