A condominium at the Parque das Nações has little in common with an older building in central Lisbon. The entrances are wide, with floor-to-ceiling glass, pale large-format flooring and a waiting area beside the concierge desk. It is handsome and unforgiving: every fingerprint on the glass and every trolley-wheel mark is in plain view of whoever walks in. Glass is done with a squeegee, leaving no halo along the joints, and the pale flooring needs the mop rinsed and changed between the lobby and the corridors, because dragging the same water from one to the other only spreads the grey around. The team's arrival time and the use of the service lift are agreed with the concierge. The heavy work is underneath the building. The garages around Oriente and Cabo Ruivo run to two or three levels, with an access ramp, marked bays and a constant deposit of brake dust. We sweep, wash the circulation lanes and scrub the ramp, which is where dirt grips because of the slope, and we clear the gullies, which keeps smells and standing water away. The refuse store, with its separate containers for each waste stream, is washed and disinfected on a set day; without that, in the warm months the smell climbs the stairwell into the residential floors. The neighbourhood has a lot of turnover: short lets, holiday rentals, frequent moves. That shows up as cardboard and packaging left beside the containers, marks on the lift walls and sand carried in from the riverside walk. With the building manager we draw a clear line between routine cleaning and extraordinary work, such as a house move that has left the lobby filthy or building work in one flat, so there is no argument afterwards. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, at a fixed time, and we leave a written record of what was done and of anything found broken, such as a blown garage light or a door that drags as it closes.
